Information on the 2010 Census Posted: April 02, 2009
|
The Kennebunk Police Department recently received notification from the U.S. Census Bureau that
between April and July of 2009, U.S. Census employees will be visiting every housing unit in every
neighborhood within our community. In order to conduct the 2010 Decennial Census, the Census Bureau
must know the address and physical location of each place where people live or stay. In order to
accomplish this, Census employees will be on foot, wearing official identification and carrying
hand-held computers in order to capture physical addresses and their GPS coordinates.
The Census Bureau has asked police departments, local governments and civic organizations across the
country to assist them in informing citizens about this important activity in an effort to help
reduce public concern. We have placed a provided awareness poster in our police lobby in addition
to placing this information on our website.
Census workers can be identified by the official Census Bureau badge they carry. During the address
canvassing operation, census workers may ask to verify a housing structure's address and whether
there are additional living quarters on the property.
For more information regarding the process the US Census Bureau will take in verifying residential
addresses prior to beginning the 2010 census, visit:
